The 37th joint meeting of UN Tourism’s Commission for Asia and the Pacific and the Commission for South Asia, held in Jakarta, highlighted the region’s rapid recovery and its focus on sustainable tourism. With 17 countries represented, the meeting focused on strategies for tourism development beyond recovery, aiming for a more resilient and sustainable future.

After a slow recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, Asia and the Pacific are witnessing a strong return in tourism. In 2024, the region welcomed 316 million international visitors, reaching 87% of pre-pandemic levels, up from 66% at the end of 2023. South Asia led the recovery, with Maldives seeing the highest growth of 20% over 2019 levels, followed by Japan (16%), Fiji (10%), and Sri Lanka (7%). Host country Indonesia recorded a recovery of 86%, with 13.9 million visitors in 2024.

UN Tourism emphasized the need for increased investments in sustainability and resilience. Between 2018 and 2024, the region attracted over $66 billion in greenfield tourism projects, accounting for over one-third of global tourism-related capital expenditures. The Secretary-General of UN Tourism, Zurab Pololikashvili, reiterated that innovation and youth empowerment are at the heart of the region’s tourism strategy. He highlighted Asia and the Pacific’s dynamic role in digital transformation, which can propel the region toward a bright future in tourism.

During the meeting, UN Tourism hosted the first Regional Conference on “Tourism Policy on Circular Economy,” bringing together public and private sector leaders. Discussions centered on reducing waste, enhancing resource efficiency, and rethinking supply chains in the tourism sector.

Education and human capital development were also key priorities. The development of a Co-branded Master’s in Tourism Management with Beijing International Studies University, offering 15 full scholarships annually, was presented as a major step toward building expertise in the sector. Additionally, a Master’s in Digital Marketing and Analytics in collaboration with Macao University of Tourism aims to equip future tourism professionals with essential skills.

Future Focus and Elections

UN Tourism also fulfilled its statutory obligations, with elections for key positions in the upcoming 26th UN Tourism General Assembly. The Philippines and Maldives were nominated as Vice Presidents, while the Philippines will Chair the Commission for South Asia, and the Maldives will lead the Commission for East Asia and the Pacific. Japan and Fiji were nominated as Vice-Chairs for East Asia and the Pacific, with India and Bhutan as Vice-Chairs of South Asia.

The Executive Council will see representatives from Iran and India for the Asia-Pacific region. All nominations are pending ratification by the General Assembly.

Looking ahead, Malaysia will host World Tourism Day 2025, marking another significant event for tourism development in the region.

UN Tourism’s efforts aim to guide the region’s recovery through sustainable, innovative strategies that not only restore but strengthen the tourism industry, benefiting both the economy and local communities.
