British Airways has announced the temporary suspension of its flights between London Heathrow and Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, a route it has consistently operated since at least 2000, aside from short breaks during the pandemic. The final flight for the time being took place on March 29, with the airline planning to resume services later in the winter season when supply chain challenges are expected to ease.
On March 29, British Airways’ final flight from London to Dallas, flight BA192, took off from Heathrow at 11:14 UTC, landing at Dallas/Fort Worth at 16:01 local time. However, the return flight from Dallas to London experienced an unexpected change in plans. The Airbus A380 that was scheduled to operate the return leg was diverted to Boston Logan International Airport on April 30. The aircraft landed at 02:31 UTC -4, but resumed its journey later, departing Boston at 05:31 UTC and completing its journey to Heathrow, where it arrived at 16:34 UTC.
The suspension of the London-Dallas route is linked to delays in the delivery of critical engine components from Rolls-Royce, which manufactures the engines for the airline’s Boeing 787 fleet. British Airways also confirmed that the A380s used on the Dallas route are powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engines. With engine deliveries still delayed, the airline decided to suspend the service to manage its fleet and operations more effectively.
Passengers were assured that, although direct flights between London and Dallas are temporarily suspended, they could still travel on one of the airline’s partner carriers. British Airways expressed regret over the disruption and confirmed that it plans to return to the Dallas route in November 2024.
Despite British Airways’ suspension, American Airlines, a fellow member of the oneworld alliance, continues to offer a comprehensive schedule between London and Dallas. According to Cirium data, American Airlines will operate up to five daily flights on the route from April through October, with a slight reduction in May, when four daily flights will be available.
In November, British Airways plans to reintroduce flights on the route, utilizing a Boeing 777-200ER. This aircraft will feature 48 business class, 40 premium economy, and 184 economy class seats. Meanwhile, British Airways is expanding its Boeing 787 operations, with a slight increase in the number of flights compared to the previous year.
Although the suspension of the London-Dallas route is a temporary setback, British Airways continues to see positive growth in other areas of its operations. The airline has expanded its A380 services, adding 14 additional weekly flights in April. British Airways remains optimistic that supply chain issues will be resolved soon, allowing it to return to full service on the London-Dallas route as scheduled.
